Internet Explorer has long been at the heart of many jokes involving browser compatibility, and poor browsing performance, but it seems that Microsoft may be planning to right the ship with the launch of an all-new browser.
The Trending Rumor:
According to a report from ZDNet, a new lightweight browser internally called “Spartan” may be in the works. The browser is reported to use Microsoft’s Chakra JavaScript engine, and Trident rendering engine, and will be designed to compete more directly with Chrome and Firefox.
How exactly Microsoft plans to roll out this browser remains to be seen, but rumor has it that it will be launching alongside IE12 at the Windows 10 launch.
Our Take:
It’s far too early to know whether a project like “Spartan” will be a rebirth for Microsoft’s browser dreams, but what we know of the rumored concept certainly shows promise. And seeing as how Windows 10 is meant to bridge the desktop, smartphone, and tablet experiences, we are definitely curious to see if this lightweight browser can perform well all-around.
As far as the codename goes…if “Spartan” is meant to be Halo related like Microsoft’s well-received “Cortana” project, we should be in for a treat.
